Baton Rouge is bounded on the west by the Mississippi River and the east by the Amite river. The city is protected from the Mississippi by gigantic levees. That isn’t the problem. We’ve received so much rain that the other primary drainage system, the Amite river, is overwhelmed and flooding. Many of the areas can’t drain because the river is full and won’t accept any more.
Many people don’t realize the Amite is 117 miles long and drains over 1,300 square miles. The maps shows that it extends into the state of Mississippi and indicates the location of stream gages with green triangles. Nearly every gage along the river has hit or is expected to break all previous records.
The gages east of Baton Rouge have already crested or will crest tonight.
Normal river elevation for this gage is 10 to 15 feet. It’s expected to crest at 46. That’s roughly 30 feet of depth the river doesn’t normally see - that’s the equivalent of a three-story building!
Although I post about Baton Rouge, it’s really a reference point that most people know. I really live in the more rural area south of the city. Our Parish (county to everyone else in the states) won’t see the crest until Monday afternoon. While our home is on high ground, our church and school are expected to flood. This is the first time the waters have risen this high in the 50+ years since those buildings were built. We spent the day sandbagging, setting up pumps, and moving everything at least four feet off the floor in hopes of minimizing the damage.
FEMA says that this is the 1% flood plain for the Parish, but they don’t take into account the levees and the pump station which keep a good portion of the center of the parish dry. The southeast portion which is most susceptible to flooding is mostly unoccupied. Makes sense. It’s mostly swamp.
This flood has already expanded into areas which have never flooded before. With the river cresting in two days and a 75% chance or rain tomorrow and Monday, we are expecting things to get really bad.
If you are traveling in the area, don’t try to take I-10/I-12 through Baton Rouge. The I-12 branch has been closed from Baton Rouge to Mandeville. At 62 miles long, I think this is the longest closure ever in the state.
On a final note, one of the local aerial photography providers caught some footage to show the extent of the flooding in Zachary, a small town north of Baton Rouge. They are on the back side of the flooding, provided they don’t get any more rain. The down side is they are sending all that water our way.

Hey man, we just got out of Baton Rouge earlier today. Our house is by tiger stadium and it was 2 feet from flooding. My girlfriend’s mom lost her house out in denim springs. So we decided to pack up a lot of our stuff and use my pickup to get though the flooding to Nicholson and get out. I nearly lost it once as it got above the hood for a minute but we made it out and dear god did I feel like a badass afterwards. That said our roommate is still there because he refused to leave so he is just stuck at the house. I’m hoping the flooding will not (despite all evidence) get better because my girlfriend’s miata is still there. You stay safe man!

Thanks. We are on high ground and we’ve stocked up on enough food for a couple of weeks. Even if the power goes out, we have a generator with enough fuel for a few days. We’re good!

I have a friend who lives in Baton Rouge proper. She posted a photo of her house earlier this evening with water already coming up to the foundation. She and her family evacuated. Took a truck to make it out safely. :/

I’m glad you were able to get out. While we were sandbagging, a girl followed a big truck through the flood waters next to the church and flooded her engine. A bunch of the guys pushed her out of the street and onto high ground next to the church.
Stay safe yourself and don’t drive through any more deep water!

That sucks man. I hope it doesn’t get any worse. Do you have family in Nicholson? I live an hour north of there.

I’ve been keeping tabs on how bad it is down there. It’s crazy how much flooding is going on there. We were supposed to get more than what we actually did up here in Hattiesburg. Most of it ended up staying along the coast and in LA.
Is that stretch of I-10 where the really long bridge over the swamp is or is that further down?

Oh no I was not talking about the town, I was talking about Nicolson dr. in Baton Rouge, it is one of the biggest roads in the city and the way to get in and out along with highland.

You are talking about the Atchafalaya basin bridge. It’s west of Baton Rouge. The Atchafalya is the designated overflow for the Mississippi River. I was there when they opened the spillway gates in 2011 and spent the next two weeks driving the tops of the levees to monitor their condition.

Ok. Yeah I couldn’t remember where it was down there. Been several years since I have been that far over on 10.

My wife’s friend has been stuck on IH-12 for over 24 hours with her husband and 3 children (including a baby). 911 doesn't answer their phones.

Nobody ever cares about the bass player. In my band back on high school, I got a total of one compliment for my playing. And drummers are completely insane 99% of the time. Both of ours were. The first one literally punched a hole completely through my buddies garage door with his stick and stabbed one of the cones on my amp for no reason at all.
